Chained

from the back of the mountains
she arises
through the trees
she swims
into pure air
she vanishes;
mighty rock you have swallowed her
deep in your depths i lay
scratch-free i grin
i lack a flaw

from the air above
he sprints
piercing the expanse
he advances deep and deeper he goes
mighty rock he leaves you bare
deep in your depths he reaches
shanty is a city he leaves

Lucky ram
you endure the furnace
brookes sprout on you as you lay bare on the veld

Can i vanishand build my life
by the stream, or the valley
on the summit, or the foot
of that giant tree

Release me into the wilderness
let grow tall this willow
for palms never sprout in caves.
